   Breed Portrait

The Australian Shepherd, dearly called Aussie, is and attentive,
very loyal, mid-size dog which belongs to the herding dogs.

As a herding dog he has more demands than an `ordinary´ dog.
It is very important that he gets enough daily mental and physical activity.
If you can offer that, he will show a calm and relaxed behavior in your home.
Enough activity doesn’t mean that you play with him 24 hours a day.
It‘s enough to take your dog on a walk for 2 – 3 hours a day and not let him
do his own thing on those walks all the time, but play fetch with him,
teach him obedience and how to hunt in a playful way.
There are no limits to your ideas and fantasies.
You should also spend some time with your dog at home.
Even here every kind of activity is right no matter how unusual and weird it might be.
(e.g. teaching tricks, giving the paw, slalom through your legs, waving etc.)
With this `program´ you can occupy the Aussie pretty well.
Certainly, you can always do a little bit more once in a while.
But you should always be aware that a dog demands what you offer him.
That means, if you take your Aussie on six hour walks from the beginning
and play fetch with him for two hours a day, he will always want that
– that’s why I would like to warn you not only against too little
but also too much attention.

The Australian Shepherd is a real watchdog who protects everything and
everybody belonging to him, and is usually very reserved towards strangers.
These characteristics are very common for „normal“ trained dogs, but not for dogs
trained for shows. But of course there are always exceptions.

The Aussie is in general very easy to train and is therefore also used
in many different fields. He is suited for all fields of dog sports
(e.g. Agility, Obedience and Flyball), but also as a Therapy - and Guide Dog
and he is also usuable for safe and rescue services.
An Aussie can learn almost everything, but as with every other dog
you have to train him well. Even an Aussie wasn’t born already fully trained.
If you are willing to invest some time in your dog, you will find more than just
a good worker, to say a true friend who will follow you on all your paths through life.

But if you aren’t too convinced about the time intensive training,
this dog can very quickly pick up some characteristics you don’t want
him to develop. For an example, I would like to mention overzealous barking
or over proctective guarding of cars and children. Those are certainly
harmless things which an Aussie can teach himself, but which can also be
very annoying. Therefore, you should have a real picture of which characteristics
you would like to support or you would like to forbid and already enable the
young dog to develop all opportunities for social contacts with people and vets.
This is the foundation for a loved and welcomed dog throughout his whole life.

Characteristics:

Its coat is especially easy to care for and weatherproof,
which should be combed 1 – 2 times a week depending on the length of the hair.
Because of the different colors and badges every dog is unique.
The exclusively accepted colors are:

Black
Blue Merle
Red
Red Merle

All colors can have white and/or copperplate badges.
The part around the eyes and ears should not be dominated by white.
White badges at the trunk, but also half or entire white heads do NOT agree
with the Breed Standard. Merle & Merle breedings can lead to serious
genetic defects and are therefore prohibited in Germany.
On June, 1st 1998 tail docking was prohibited in Germany
(the law of protection of animals). There is also a prohibiton
on exhibiting dogs which were docked after the above date.
Because of this law Aussies that, according to the US Breed Standard,
are usually docked or born with a natural bobtail
(that should be docked if it is longer than 2-3 inches),
will be seen with all different lengths of tails here in Germany.

The eye colors are:

Brown: (amber – dark brown)
mostly blacks & blue merles

Amber: (yellow – green – amber)
mostly reds & red merles

Blue: (water to light blue)
mostly blues & red merles, very rare in blacks & reds.

Also combinations of the above mentioned colors are not unusual.
You call this flecked or marbled eyes.

Pigmentation:

Noses, eye lids and lips must match the color of the coat
that means:

Blacks & blue merles = black pigmentation
Reds & red merles = liver colored (brown) pigmentation

Height:

Female Aussies between 18 and 21 inches
Male Aussies between 20 and 23 inches

Last but not least:

The life expectancy of the Aussies is relatively high
and he is known to be a very robust dog.

To keep it that way in the future we would like to ask you to make
sure that your dog’s parents are free of HD (hip joint dysplasia),
that their eyes get checked every year and that they
also have complete scissor teeth.

Ask for the report of the medical examination!
If you want to breed with your Aussie (at the age of 2 years or later),
your dog definitely has to have those criterics to meet the breeding standards.
