Sunny Hill Aussies - Maika Ditzig
Ranger is my personal "once in a lifetime dog". I learnd a lot for my further live from him
and there is no word that can describe my relationship towards him.
He is very reserved towards strangers, very protective, a very good herder and still very affectionate.
He fully meets the ASCA Breed Standard regarding temperament.
The Standard says that an Aussie
should be reserved towards strangers, but shouldn’t show any shyness. Ranger is exactly like
that. He ignores strangers normally or trys to make new friends by bringing his toys for a game.

If someone comes over to our house, this person is welcomed with loud barking, no matter if
this is a friend or a stranger. One of his jobs is to protect our house and he does it very well!
We are able to differ his barking and know if a stranger or a friend is in front of the door :-)

After only eight months, he was already showing very good herding instinct, I’m sure he would
have started sooner, if we had given him the opportunity to do so. He really began herding
when he was nine months old. We were visiting Anneke de Jong and Bjintze Jager in the Netherlands
for four days. Ranger proved his talents immediately through his strong drive to work.
Unfortunately his drive was to much for me as a beginner and so he was never able to show his
full potential that surely is in him.

Anyway he got his STD cattle and ducks and got two second places at his OTD sheep legs.
So he showed that he is able to work stock and all the judge comments shows me that he
could be much better with another handler than me.

Very important to us is the versatility of our dogs, therefore we do not only herding with Ranger
but also agility and obedience. In Agility he is a dog who works wide and doesn´t want to make
any mistakes. He has learned all obstacles playfully and fast. We have had no problems with any
of the obstacles because Ranger is full of trust and never hesitated to do what he was asked for.
Because of our swap to a FCI club at the beginning of 2007 we started our competition career a
little bit later than normal. But we are sure that we will be successful there too.

In Obedience he learns very quick and works very correct. So he was able to pass the
Begleithundeprüfung at only 11 months. We didn’t want to stop the training afterwards so we decided
to take Ranger in the next training level. He passed his bronze decoration at only 17 months.
In June 2004, now just 2,5 years old, he achieved his silver decoration. The coronation of all
this work is the
gold decoration that he achieved in June 2005 with the age of 3,5 years.
So he is the youngest dog in the 14year history of the club who gets this decoration. Above all he
is the only dog in this club who never fail an examination. We are very proud of this because it
is very special to beat two records on one day.
I would like to thank my husband Robby for doing this great work with Ranger - both are an
excellent team by now.
Ranger is in the dogshool twice a week and in summer at a few agility competitons. That proves
that working Aussies doesn’t mean you have to work them 24 hours a day, or do herding with them
at all in order to be content. Ranger is a very quite dog in the house, he is not on our nerves
and knows how to behave himself. But if you demand action from him he well be alert and is always
ready for a lark. A dog for all cases.
Even in winter when almost all activities rest, Ranger is neither too nervous nor does he demand
always new jobs to do. He is a very balanced dog who is just happy to be with us, even if that
means just to lay quite under a table if we go out for dinner or to learn new tricks that nobody needs in his life ;-)

He is totally loyal and devoted towards us, he would do everything for us. We can count on him in
every situation. I feel absolutly save with him on my site even if I´m outside in the dark at our far-flung sheep pasture.
You can lose yourself looking into his dark brown eyes, watching him for a while touches your heart.
He has wonderful floating, elegant movement, a tender facial expression and you get the feeling that he can look right into your soul.

We would like to say ´Thank you´ to his breeder, Maika Ditzig, for this wonderful and exceptional
dog. We really appreciate that we where picked to get just him!
When I was looking for an Aussie, everything I read were praises to Aussies. No one really explained
the "other site" that can cause to misunderstandings, that´s why I described Ranger in detail!
I am aware that an Aussie is not for everyone. But if you are able to live with his willingness
to protect his pack and with being reserved, there is no better dog than the
Australian Shepherd.
